São Miguel: Where to Stay on the Island

What is the best area?

Quick answer: It doesn’t make much difference.

São Miguel Island is relatively small, with about half the size of Los Angeles. The roads are in good condition and allow you to travel quickly from one side of the island to the other.

Thus, the choice of where to stay mainly depends on personal preferences — whether you prefer being close to urban spaces or more natural areas:

Central Area:

The central area of São Miguel is the most populated, including the main cities: Ponta Delgada and Ribeira Grande. Here, there is more traffic, but you also have better access to amenities such as shops, supermarkets, restaurants, and other services. If possible, it’s better to avoid staying in the center of Ponta Delgada, as rush-hour traffic makes it difficult to enter and leave the city.

Western Area:

Great for nature and hiking lovers, this region stands out for the stunning landscapes of Sete Cidades and the surrounding areas. Additionally, Mosteiros is a good choice for those who enjoy beaches and swimming spots.

Eastern Area:

Wilder and genuine, this area offers breathtaking landscapes and incredible hiking trails. Here, you’ll find the famous Furnas with their thermal baths, along with beautiful waterfalls and spectacular viewpoints.
