When to Visit São Miguel?

The Azores are known for their rapidly changing weather conditions, with the possibility of experiencing all four seasons in a single day. Therefore, it's possible to have rainy weather in the summer and sunny, warm days in the winter.

There isn't an extreme difference between summer and winter; both are mild. Therefore, São Miguel is interesting to visit in both seasons, but the activities you can enjoy will be slightly different:

In Winter

Winter on São Miguel is cooler and rainier than in the summer, but it still offers mild temperatures that can reach up to 20°C (about 70ºF).

Winter is the ideal time to enjoy the "beach" at the hot springs, as they can become excessively hot in the summer. It's also a time when you can explore easily accessible landscapes rather than embarking on long hikes in nature.

It's the perfect moment to savor the tranquility, local gastronomy, and artisanal liqueurs, which are common on the island.

One of the advantages of visiting in winter is that airfares are cheaper, making it possible to have very affordable weekend getaways.

In Summer

Summer is the perfect season for nature hikes, discovering the incredible natural landscapes of the Azores. It's also the best time for swimming at the beaches, taking advantage of the warm waters of the Azorean sea, typically between 22 and 24°C (72 - 75ºF).

Snorkeling enthusiasts will find excellent spots for this activity, teeming with colorful fish. The islet off Vila Franca do Campo, known as Ilhéu, is especially suitable for snorkeling. It's an extinct volcano that rose from the ocean, forming a small island with an inner bay, the location of the old crater. Ilhéu is probably one of the world's best natural swimming pools.

Who to Visit São Miguel With?

Portugal is one of the safest countries in the world, and São Miguel is one of the safest regions in Portugal.

Therefore, it's ideal for families, couples, and groups of friends, especially those who are nature enthusiasts. São Miguel offers some of the most extraordinary landscapes on the planet.

How Many Days to Spend?

To reasonably explore São Miguel, you should plan for about seven days. Let's not forget that it's the largest Portuguese island, even larger than Madeira.

On the other hand, it's also a particularly suitable destination for a three-day getaway if your goal is to recharge your energy. You can, for example, take a Friday off and make the most of the weekend.
